Biomass fired boiler plants

Danish Energy Systems designs, develops,
manufactures and installs complete boiler
plants based on biomass fuel. We also supply
individual and tailor-made equipment to a large
number of European boiler manufacturers and
suppliers of biomass fuel.
Below you can see examples from biomass fired
boiler plants designed by DES.

STRAW & AGRICULTURE WASTE

Boiler plants utilising straw and agriculture waste fuel are designed to handle fuels with a water content of max. 25 %. The attached straw bale system can operate all sizes and types of straw bales. The bag house downstream of the boiler plant secures an optimal de-dusting of the waste gases.

Wheat, barley, corn stower, soya, sunflower hulls, agriculture pellets etc.

Heat value from 13.800 – 15.000 kJ/kg

Boiler plant sizes from 1 - 50 MW

WOOD CHIPS & SHAVINGS

This type of plant is designed for biomass fuels with a medium content of water. The boiler plant is connected with an upstream attached drying system. The incineration of wood chips and shavings results in dust sizes exceeding 10 micrograms so the installation of a multicyclone is required.

Shavings, sawdust, wood waste, wood chip, bark, peat etc.

Heat value from 7.000 – 15.000 kJ/kg

Boiler plant sizes from 1 – 50 MW

WOOD WASTE

Plants for wood waste utilisation are usually equipped with a hydraulic fuel feeder ensuring an exact fuel distribution. The boiler systems are especially designed for biomass fuel with a high water- and ash content. DES wood waste biomass plants avoid air pollution by using state-of-the-art bag houses.

Wood waste, wood chip, bark, sawdust, peat, wood pellets etc.

Heat value from 3.500 – 12.000 kJ/kg

Boiler plant sizes from 1 to 50 MW

Combustion grates

DES supplies combustion grates to a number of leading European boiler manufacturers and can therefore rely on established experience in utilising many kinds of biomass fuel. Our combustion grates are equipped with 100 % divided drying zones as well as combustion and cooling zones. This system secures an optimal control of the incineration process. All combustion zones are running independently from combustion air as well as belt speed and are installed among the most used combustion grates in Europe.
The grate bars are cast from special steel and contain a minimum 28 % of chrome and 1 % of nickel allowing a combustion temperature of more than 1.100 °C on the combustion bars.
All combustion grates are fabricated individually for the specific fuel requirements of the customer. We consider many factors for the grate design e.g. heat value, ash amount, ash melting point, chloride levels, hydrocarbon etc.
Combustion grates can be delivered with grate areas from 1 - 70 m2.

Hot Gas GeneratorS

DES Direct Dryer Hot Gas Generator is a system that produces high-temperature gases for direct contact with biomass or other materials in a drying process. These systems are commonly used in industries like wood processing, agriculture, and biomass pellet production.

Key Features of a Direct-Fired Hot Gas Generator

Fuel Flexibility

Can use biomass (wood chips, sawdust, pellets, rice husk, bagasse, etc.). Biomass-based systems are cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Combustion Chamber Design

Uses refractory-lined combustion chambers for high-temperature resistance. Burners can be fixed or modulating to control the temperature output.

Dust & Emission Control

Cyclone separators, bag filters, or scrubbers can be added to minimize emissions. Systems includes low-NOx combustion technology to reduce pollutants.

Preventive maintenance

Preventive maintenance of a combustion grate is essential to ensure efficient operation, reduce downtime, and extend the lifespan of the system.

Weekly Maintenance

  • Grate Movement Test: If the grate has moving parts, test them for smooth operation.

  • Inspection of Seals and Gaps: Ensure proper sealing to prevent unwanted air ingress.

  • Burner and Flame Inspection: Verify that the flame is burning cleanly without excessive smoke or incomplete combustion.

  • Temperature Monitoring: Check for hotspots or cold areas that may indicate airflow issues.

Monthly Maintenance

  • Detailed Grate Surface Inspection: Look for cracks, warping, or excessive thinning due to heat and mechanical stress.

  • Tightening of Bolts and Fasteners: Ensure all mechanical connections are secure.

  • Inspection of Cooling System (if applicable): Check for leaks or blockages in water-cooled grates.

Quarterly Maintenance

  • Deep Cleaning: Remove built-up deposits and scale from the grate and surrounding components.

  • Check Refractory Lining: Inspect for cracks or damage in the refractory lining around the grate.

  • Verify Control System Functionality: Ensure sensors, actuators, and other control elements are working correctly.

  • Check Exhaust and Emissions: Verify compliance with emission standards and clean filters or scrubbers.

Annual Maintenance

  • Full System Inspection: Conduct a thorough review of the grate system, including bearings, chains, and drive mechanisms.

  • Grate Element Replacement: Replace severely worn-out or damaged grate bars.

  • Calibration of Sensors and Controls: Ensure all temperature, pressure, and oxygen sensors are calibrated.

  • Structural Integrity Check: Examine welds, supports, and framework for fatigue or corrosion.

LICENSE PRODUCTION

We offer a licensing opportunity for the production of high-efficiency combustion grates, designed for industrial and commercial heating systems. Our advanced grate technology ensures optimal fuel combustion, reduced emissions, and enhanced durability.
